Egyptian-American actor Rami Malek just scored the Best Lead Actor at the Oscars. His portrayal of Queen’s Freddie Mercury in the hit movie Bohemian Rhapsody has been a wild ride and a life-changing experience that secured him a place among the industry’s top performers.

During his speech, he said, “I’m the son of immigrants from Egypt. I’m a first-generation American. A part of my story is being written now and I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me for this moment. It’s something that I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

Malek also thanked some of the names that helped him get there, the band Queen for letting him become a part of their “phenomenal legacy”, and talked about relating to Freddie Mercury because of his own struggles with his identity.
