After Ramy Shehata’s heroic actions to save his 51 schoolmates in North Italy’s bus hijacking, the Italian Prime Minister Giuesppe Conte decided to honor him on Monday.

The 14-year-old had kept his phone hidden even after the hijacker told everyone to hand in their phones. He managed to steadily contact his father who called the police, resulting in the rescue of the entire school bus before any harm was done.

The Italian government granted Shehata the Italian citizenship. If not for that, Shehata would’ve obtained his citizenship in 2023, at 18-years-old. The hijacker’s target was to blow the bus at the border where his family passed away while illegally immigrating, according to Al-Masry Al-Yom
