From an HR Perspective: Is Flat Organization the Answer

If you’re wondering what flat organization is, it is basically an organizational model with no middle management between the executives and the staff level employees. It was designed with the idea that knowledgeable and well-trained workers will be more productive when they are directly involved in the decision-making process of the organization, rather than being supervised by many management layers. In a nutshell, you kind of become your own boss. So, is it the best answer to all your work problems? Here is what a few HR peeps think of it.

“A lot of people believe this type of organization is used for startups, or a small business, since you don’t have that many employees. However, I believe this motivates employees, giving them a feeling of empowerment.”  -Salma, HR Director

“I honestly believe that hierarchy, means organization. Flat organizations can be useful on a smaller scale. Big corporates, on the other hand, need hierarchy and discipline.” -Hussein, HR Manager

“I completely support flat organizations. Specifically, because it allows clear internal communication. What usually happens when information is passed on through a series of ears and mouths is that it ends up either distorted, puffed up, or deflated. When communication is passed across many management layers, there is a high chance of miscommunication.” -Mahmoud, HR Manager
