According to Egypt Independent, Hany Abdel Gawad, an Azhar University surgeon, has successfully repaired a spine deformity in a first-of-its-kind procedure that was conducted in seven hours. The procedure is considered to be one of the most difficult ones in the field, give that the patient’s age (23 years old) and body type (110 cm of height and 30 kg of weight) added to the challenge.

The patient suffered from a genetic disease called brittle bone, which Abdel Gawad explains to be a disease characterized by weak and easily broken bones.

The surgeon claims that, there were no successful surgeries ever recorded in any scientific references internationally that combined all the risk factors they faced, which makes this procedure the first of its kind to succeed worldwide.

Abdel Gawad has previously received the best researcher award in 2015 on scoliosis during an international conference on the latest treatment methods of spinal deformities that took place in Canada.
